Below the belt

This is an idiom from sports. In boxing a punch below the belt is illegal. When someone makes a comment or says something that is cruel or unfair, it is "below the belt".

Example

(A) Did you hear all the John MaCain is old jokes?

(B) Yeah, some of them are really below the belt.
